The island government has resisted the kind of development seen on Cat Ba or Phu Quy, prioritizing conservation over tourism revenue. This restraint preserves the raw character of the trek: river crossings on moss-slicked stones, sudden clearings where butterflies—morpho blues and swallowtails—spiral in shafts of light, the scent of decaying leaf litter and wild orchids. The trails close during the monsoon months of September and October, when the laterite paths turn to red slurry and visibility drops to ten metres. The rest of the year, the mountain remains open, its ridges and valleys a counterpoint to the resort beaches below.
